I think the prevailing opinion was that anything alien dropping by earth would get immediately attacked. They found the concept of an outsider deeply scary and off putting.
So, writing from that POV, when colorful space men turn up out of nowhere, there's nothing else for it. Gotta kill 'em.
Its one of those odd social evolutions that makes the 1950s and 1960s look like an alien planet.
