Rokal's Raiders

Created by: Jay P Hailey
Appearance: Star Trek: Outwardly Mobile
Number of Members: Approximately 1500
Nature of Members: Sentient beings who sell their services as soldiers of fortune.
Organization: Corporate/Military
Game Role: A setting for Ves'Taal J'Coal and Noriko Nanahara to continue play, doing what they do best during Josh's hiatus
World Role: A security and military force for hire, filling in where conventional forces can't or won't.
Relative Influence: Slight. They one of hundreds or thousands of similar mercenary organizations in the Galaxy
Public or Secret: Public (But they do have a secret)
Publicly Stated Goal: To provide clients with the utmost in professional service, to fight and win battles that they are paid to win.
Relative Wealth: Compared to governments slight, they own two small starships and various orbit-to-ground fighting vehicles. Compared to individuals very large indeed.
Group advantages: As people who do violence professionally, they are very good at it and they are often paid to do violence.
Contacts: Various small planets and shipping lines across the galaxy
Special Abilities: As owners of two smaller ships, Rokal's Raiders can move across interstellar space to attack or defend. As licensed mercenaries they are allowed to go armed in ways that make local governmental enforcement bodies nervous.
Group disadvantages: Usually they are paid to enter a violent situation. They are placed in dangerous situations and taking casualties is unfortunately common.
Special Disadvantages: Most military and governmental officials consider mercenary bands little more than pirate gangs with business licenses. More aggressively uncertain officials and officers will look for an excuse to shut a mercenary group down and revoke its license
Those who favor them: Commercial shipping lines and small planets who require protection from bandits, raiders and pirates. People with enough money to hire them and the sorts of problems they can solve.
Those opposed to them: Many military and government officials. Civilians opposed to militarism. Pirates, bandits and evil overlords.
Area of Operation: Known space, usually along the frontiers and the rim.
Headquarters Location: Rokal's Raiders have a base on a moon in the Galorda system. This moon is mainly an ag colony, with no real military, strategic or political significance. This is why it makes a good headquarters. They have inhabited a military base that was built and then abandoned there 40 years ago, for reasons which have not been explored
Public Face: Professional soldiers who get the job done on time and on budget.
Notable Members: Rokal: the founder, now retired to an administrative position
Major Ressler: Handles orientation of newly recruited officers and trainers
Ves'Taal J'Coal: A former commando for an evil government, he left their service and has been self employed ever since. He is working for Rokal's Raiders Inc as a trainer and a Squad leader
Noriko Nanahara: Formerly a pilot for a pirate group, she left under bad circumstances. After joining a small time salvage organization, she has followed Ves'Taal to work for Rokal's. She is training combat pilots and leads a 4 ship element.
History of the Group: Fifteen years ago Rokal and his group were members of the loosing side of a civil war. The elected to flee rather than surrender and went commercial as mercenaries.
They led a hand-to-mouth existence sometimes doing well, most often struggling. They suffered some turn over and within ten years more than half the original crew was dead or retired, and Rokal found himself leading people who did not share his background in the war. But he trained them carefully and demanded a high standard of behavior and subsisted, if barely on a reputation of being honorable.
Five years ago, Rokal was preparing to retire and disband his outfit when a silent partner stepped in. The silent partner upgraded the equipment available to Rokal's Raiders and allowed Rokal to hire enough experienced people so that he could retire to a rear echelon administrative position.
Newcomers to Rokal's Raiders are not informed of the identity of the silent partner nor even that such a partner exists.
Rokal is very much aware of it and doesn't seem to have any problem with the quid-pro-quo his arrangement with his silent partner requires.
