History and Experiences Which have Affected Character Greatly: Dr. Rajiv Omteten was a middle of the road social researcher with and unusual field of study, Earth. While his class mates and colleagues went to the stars, Rajiv stayed home and studied his neighbors.
Rajiv then read some of the works of Mian Hya. Her attitude made him angry, in a non-confrontational sort of way. Earth culture wasn't dead. Indeed the lack of internal conflict had produced a flowering of art and culture. Rajiv set out to prove her wrong, by writing a great work, set on 24th century Earth.
"Midnight in the Garden of Revelations" is that work. It took Rajiv five years to write his book. Drawing on inspiration from all of Earth Rajiv tells the tale of three couples enjoying a relaxing romp and quiet party in a garden of Earthly delights. Together and separately the nine books of the massive novel interweave the lives of the characters. Through parables they tell each other and conversations within the garden on a single night each is revealed to the reader, if not entirely to each other. Each couple parts with the dawn, the garden left fresh and awaiting the next set of revelers.
Critics have called the book a rambling, plotless, allegory heavy, excuse for the modern age. Others say it is a brilliant piece of character work that lays open the heart and soul of Earth has she is, and will stand the ages. The ages have yet to weight in on the matter, but no one is neutral. No matter the opinion, the book is on the lips of anyone that is anyone. It is the must read of the decade.
Rajiv and his wife Barbara are the current guests of choice at all the big social functions.
Rajiv is currently working on his second book, one he promises, to the disappointment of some, and the relief of others, is not a continuation of "Midnight". Rajiv also writes more scholarly papers and shorter popular pieces.
