Founded in the 1840s as a mining Camp, known as "Poverty Flats" eventually a rail line came through. The town subsisted on mining, logging and cattle.

1875, the town was the site of lawlessness and conflict, with twon residents and law enforcement slowly gaining an upper hand.

1885, all inhabitants of the town vanished without a trace, an enduring mystery of region. The Town was quickly resettled and renamed Vista City

In 1917 and 1941 Fort Reid was reactivated and used for miltary training.

from 1900 to 1950 the town all but died, until the interstate came through.
