All of the major professional sports have this time period where they evolved into a modern form.

Baseball reached a form we'd recognize in the 1890s or so, earlier than other such sports.

Also look at the schedule. 150 games versus 1 per week for football. So they'll do 14 - 16 games per season. I don't know how many games Basketball or Hockey play per season.

Baseball reflects it's victorian era origin - they work the players to death.

But also, the names and functions of positions will be different.

Baseball, most of the time you're sitting or standing around. Leisurely. Pitchers work the hardest, which is why a team has so many.

The game wouldn't wear me down, the travel would. The multi-game series are an artifact of having to choo choo to another city. You spent a day+ to get there, you play several games.

Greenfield Village plays 1880s baseball on the weekends.
