I don't see anything wrong inherently with the webp format.

But a lot of programs (Like this forum) can't see them yet
This forum is badly out of date. The upgrade process is non-trival. I am trying to get up the courage to do it.

Both GIMP and gwenview have no issues, My issue is "why?" Do we need yet another image format?

I prefer PNG for my own use and will stay with it. Like them on the web. I never store things on the web.

You didn't read the articles I linked. WEBPs are about 25% more compressed than comparable PNGs.

So a website only has to load 75% as much data, improving performance.

I did actually. When did milliseconds matter?

Also yell at fucking google for making it, not me

Like they ever listen. They scrubbed the "Don't" off the motto years ago.

Agreed, but not in the case of WEBP. I can't find any evidence it's anything other than a more modern compression algorithm

Google is harming their search to make people look longer and get subjected to more ads, because they're trying to maximize profit.

There's a whole podcast about that

https://www.betteroffline.com/

Ed Zitron, a journalist has been tracking the "enshitification" of Google and he's appropriately angry and cynical about it. He's great.

So I am not defending Google. I regret diving into the Google walled garden at this point.

But in the specific case of WEBP format, I can't find anything evil or underhanded about it. Just something newer than JPG and PNG

Their search results have not been fucked over in the way Google's have.
