I killed Gavin in a vortex in a rushing river for two reasons
To get Jerry's character out of my hair.
To scrape the modern guns and armor off the PCs - up until the vortex, Gavin, Lydia, Geoff and Hackuff were using guns. By that time, they were probably pretty fuckin low on Ammo. The level of Corsair also included training on how to use Sword, Bow and armor native to Abir-Toril
Everyone caught in the vortex had to shed everything to survive, and Gavin did not make that dex save. Nor that fort save. Nor the strength save.

Re: Gavin
This is Gavin's character sheet and noodling from Jerry about his origin point. Included here for curiousity's sake.
He meant a lot to Lydia.
Jay's all "Meh"
Oh, he used character classes out of SWD20r - these are compatible with the D20 modern system I was basing the game in originally
-*-
Here is everything in one. Now that I am doing this I believe when I leveled Gavin I did it on paper. I will look for that later and post anupdated character sheet.
Inventory wise we have lost the big guns, armored trench coats, and big gun magazines.

Gavin's Original AOA Background
From email
Quote
Gavin Travis is from a world (dimension?) which sounds very similar to Lydia's and ours. He would recognize things like Los Angeles and the Police family picnic. But about 10-12 years ago his world was ravaged by something (haven't decided specifics yet, being pulled in a couple of different directions). The survivors have scrambled to stay alive in the aftermath, and the collapse of civilization and Gavin has been fairly successful at it. He was part of a group that had managed to settle, make a location relatively secure, and restart some small scale agriculture.
They scavenge the world for salvageable useful stuff, and hide from other small bands of humans who have resorted to cannibalism to survive. Cannibalism is the big fear, and Gavin's group is almost psychotic in their opposition to it. This is not uncommon among the non cannibal survivor bands. There is also a very strong property value ethic. Taking something useful from someone can doom them to die. Horribly. So stuff that isn't re-homesteaded is up for grabs, but taking personal property from another living person is about 2 steps down from cannibalism, with a complex array of evaluation based on need and status relative to the person. Taking someone's food or water is 1 step down from cannibalism.
For example:
A cannibal tries to kill you. You kill him, and take his stuff. That's OK.
A cannibal tries to kill you. You win but let him go. Letting a cannibal go is bad. Only the truly altruistic would do it. But if you let him live you cannot take his stuff except for weapons.
A non cannibal tries to kill you. You Kill him and take his stuff. Distasteful, but acceptable with suitable remorse.
A non cannibal tries to kill you. You win but let him go. You can only take ranged weapons and medical supplies needed immediately (he wounded you, you can take his first aid kit to treat your injury), and it is preferable to leave them for him to retrieve at some distance to ensure that you have gotten out of range.
Generally taking something from someone who has not attacked you is unacceptable and will get you tossed out of groups. Even the cannibal groups do this. Well, they don't toss you out...................
The more you need something to survive the more OK it is to take it, but a real sense of remorse is expected. If you are dying of thirst and you take another man's last bottle of water no one is going to fault you. But he better not be a part of your group, and you better ask your deity for a lot of forgiveness, and do some pennence. A high value is placed on sacrificing oneself rather than stealing to survive, but it is recognized that this is a rare discipline. Those who are able to are venerated.
Prior to the disaster Gavin was a medical specialist of some type, but with hobby interests in technology, weapons, and outdoors activities like gardening, camping and fishing. This served him well initially, but the world is getting to the point where most stuff has been scavenged, especially food. Gavin's group was able to formulate a plan and goals early on, and execute their plan in a relatively organized fashion. They had a clue. That is why they are more successful than other survivors have been. Most of the other groups went from modern civilization to zero overnight and that is why they did not do as well. But after a decade of fighting to survive natural selection has left mostly very capable people.
Gavin wake's up naked in an unfamiliar environment and goes through the process Lydia went through of finding clothes, and exploring the ship. But he does it a lot more cautiously and with a different perspective. He won't be yelling for his wife. He is about 40 years old.

I guess discussing it off the board would be better, then if anyone cares we can reveal it in dialog.
Something a lot of people close to me don't understand is that I do not like zombies. I do not like asteroids, or nuclear war, or super volcanoes, or alien invasions. I like stories. I like stories about people overcoming adversity, and the struggle to maintain their humanity through difficult times, and how they adapt and overcome difficulties. Monica doesn't get it. People at work don't get it. Nobody gets it.
One of the things that I really liked about The Road was that they never say what the disaster was. They don't spend much time on the disaster at all. The whole book is about a man and his son trying to make it in harsh conditions. You can speculate and conjecture and wild ass guess, but ultimately you never know what exactly caused those harsh conditions. That is what I'm thinking of for Gavin.
He can describe the effects, but he doesn't really know what happened. Nobody does.
From The Road
The clocks stopped at one seventeen. There was a long shear of bright light, then a series of low concussions. I think it's October but I can't be sure. I haven't kept a calender for years. Each day is more gray than the one before. It is cold and growing colder as the world slowly dies. No animals have survived, and all the crops are long gone. Someday all the trees in the world will fall. The roads are peopled by refugees towing carts, and gangs carrying weapons, looking for fuel and food.
Within a year there were fires on the ridges and deranged chanting. There has been cannibalism. Cannibalism is the great fear. Mostly I worry about food, always food. Food and the cold and our shoes. Sometimes I tell the boy old stories of courage and justice, difficult as they are to remember. All I know is the child is my warrant, and if he is not the word of God, then God never spoke.
I imagine Gavin's disaster is slightly different than the one in The road. Or he got to a different place faster. The clocks stopped, power went away, vehicles wouldn't work, ash falls from the sky, much of the world is burning or has already burned, animals and plants die. Gavin and his family make it to the southwest, closer to the equater. Closer to the equater some sun still gets through. Among all of his gear, his greatest material treasure was a small breifcase that he used to store his garden seeds before the disaster. They find a place where there is some sun, and some water, and make a home. They plant. They grow some food.
Back to The Road proper
In The Road it is 8-12 years after the disaster. This is a guess. The woman is pregnent when the disaster happens. She gives birth after. Guestimate the boys age and that gives you a rough estimate of how long ago it was. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking by 12 years post disaster the ash causing the "nuclear winter" should be precipitating out of the atmosphere. The sun should be coming again sometime. The question then becomes, did any plants or animals survive somewhere to repopulate the earth. We know the northern hemisphere is toast. But what about the southern hemisphere?
Problems with The Road. Where are the insects? They should be feeding on the dead, even the burned and charred wood. And in turn they would become a food source. If the disaster was bad enough to kill the insects, then it would be almost impossible for any humans to survive. Where was that one bird ging that he mentions hearing flying south.? Did the fish and animals in the deeps of the sea survive? We do not know.

From Jay with my responses in bold, copied from email
Okay - there are three things I know of that could create the effects you're
speaking of.
A) Asteroid strke - a big one. The sun wouldn't come out for years.
B) Super Volcano - these would be giving us warning.
C) A weird limited nucleear strike. The Problem is - only an Asteroid or
super volvano could block out the sun like that - you'd need a full-on
nuclear exchange and that wouldn't get past much of anyone.
The thing that has always stopped me with asteroid strike or super volcano is the EMP. The clocks stopped line screams EMP. But it could also just be universal power outage. The lack of vehicles is very suggestive of EMP, but not definitive. The sudden shear of light and series of dull concussions is suggestive of nuclear strikes at some distance, but again, not definitive. We see one old diesel truck in more or less functional condition. Old diesels and pre electronic vehicles could be made operational again, but the number of people who know that is very limited. But ash could also disable most vehicles. The fact that the only way to start the truck is by pushing it is again suggestive of EMP, but it could also be a 10-12 year old battery that won't hold a charge.
EMP in modern survivalist parlance screams nuclear. But he talks about the cities and what is happening/has happened. He implies that New York is still standing. The cities burn, but the unburned buildings are not knocked over and blown apart. The big eastern seaboard cities are first line targets for the only power who can hit the U.S. accurately with a nuke. New York, Boston, Philly, and DC should be flat as a pancake after a nuclear exchange. Plus one that would have the effects we see in the book, like you said it would be obvious. And he never ever mentions radiation in the book. Not once.
I've been giving a lot of thought to solar flares, with all of the info that has been coming out in the run up to 2012 (We're all gonna die!!!!!!
) Solar flares of the magnitude the doomsayers predict would start fires everywhere, and that could give us the ash. Literally the whole world would be on fire. They would have the EMP effect of frying electronics and electrical systems. I don't know if they could do enough genetic damage to kill small animals and insects, while leaving larger organisms more intact. That's the great thing about The Road. The disaster doesn't fit any one specific disaster.
He can describe the effects, but he doesn't really know what happened.
Nobody does.
Okay - we'll call it Schroedingers Disaster, and paste bigs of different
end of the world
Begin with riots and panic
The sun goes out
initial battles vs desperate crazy people
plague
ash-fall
survivors struggle against the environment and predatory loons to find a
place to start over.
Loss of electricity and electronics, vehicles stop working, a lot of fires. That would be a big enough disruption to effectively stop our civilization. That would spur the rioting, looting, battles with crazies.
Problems with The Road. Where are the insects?
The problem is that Insects, rats, crows ad other vermin are going to out
live humans by quite a stretch. It would have to be something weird to get
them first.
Exactly
As the food chain collapses, you go from complex to simple.
Yep
So simple creatures add creatures that can scavenge off the dead will be the
last to go.
Precisely
Cold would kill all the bugs, or put them on hold. But that wouldn't stop
rats, mice, pigeons and crows. They'd feast on the dead in the cities.
It would have to be real cold to get the insects. Much colder than it is in the book. There would never be liquid rain or liquid water in the environment. And that still wouldn't account for mammals, or lice, fleas, roaches and other things that either piggy back on mammals or live in mammals immediate vicinity. The lack of insects and small mammals is a huge problem. But it's also a great part of the mystery.
So woould feral cats and dogs.
He mentions feral and kept dogs, and butchered or sacrificed cats. So I think humans would eliminate most of them. But he mentions bodies that have lain around long enough to desiccate naturally. They should have been eaten and scattered or at least denuded.
I am late for work
Hope you have/had a good day.
I see where you're going.
Yep. I like the mystery, and the way it redirects the focus. I'm a fanatic, so I keep trying to figure it out anyway. But I really like the "That doesn't matter. This is what matters." aspect of it.
Now Gavin is out of that environment - the question is - how did it change
him? How did it change his out look? His view of what are considered
standard comforts of the ship?
His fashion sense is gone. He is wearing purple pants
He looked immediately for the basic gear of survival. He doesn't feel right without knives, light, and fire. The ship is luxurious. But he is old enough to remember the world that was before. So he can adapt back to it. Humans are amazingly plastoid. Almost anything can become normal.
Gavin still isn't sure this isn't a dream, or hallucination induced by drugs or head trauma, or purgatory, or a big con put on by one, several, or all of the others, or someone else entirely. He is just going with the flow until he gathers enough information to reach a conclusion. He has multiple hypotheses. He doesn't know which one will develop into theory.
He meant a lot to Lydia.
Jay's all "Meh"

desk has sharpening tools, and a few wood working tools and a few gunsmithy tools, prominent among them a rasp, three sided, heavy thread to fine. Six's Picture of Laura Holliday, and Gavin's pictures of Rena, Cassius, and Griffin. Gavin's base notebook.

Book-The book looks like something from the lord of the rings movies. It's shaped like a broad leaf. The covers are a soft wood that acts like leather bound book covering - and the pages are... white leaves. There is a leafy vein pattern in them but it's very faint, like a water mark.
The book has scientific notations in it Looks like physics to Gavin. The writing is small, precise but feminine hand writing.
